Reading: internet of old things What is it?
To read this article, I should first understand what is the Internet of Things (loT). The IoT is an extension and expansion of the Internet. Its user side extends from item to item, allowing information to be exchanged between items. The IoT enables users to have a better experience through technologies such as intelligent sensing and recognition. Internet of old things is as the name implies a connection that an object maintains with its history or memory.
The authors argue that we should not only use the IoT to predict new things, but also to connect old things, and that these connections can add value to old things.
Connection
When objects are individually marked with a unique identity through the addition of a small electronic chip or barcode, their history is recorded and made available to others via the web. This section is very close to my practice. It reflects the interaction between people and objects. QR codes become a medium for fast information processing which is very convenient and human-centred design.
The essay also explores our relationship with our personal social history and talks about creative ways to understand the past through film. These are things I still need to understand in depth.
I think digital technologies that can connect the past to objects are available to me.
